John B. and the 7th Cavalry is a historical novel written by the late John F. (Jack) Turney and is based on letters and other family documents as well as oral histories and paints a picture of life in the West in the 1800s. 

It's follow the life of "John B." from his birth in the Eastern United States and takes through his life in the Calvary and then later life in Kansas.

It reads like a screenplay and has many interesting actual descriptions of events surrounding the 7th Cavalry.
